I keep hearing the word elitism thrown around in regards to Senator Obama. It was also used in reference to Senator Kerry in the 2004 Election. He was afraid to show to the American people his fluency in the French language because he didn't want to seem pretentious. Obama speaks five languages, but no one knows that because apparently being a polyglot is a detriment to someone who is running for the highest office. Who knew?
Senator McCain has called Senator Obama an elitist - this coming from the man who owns 8 houses and was grandfathered into Annapolis. He is calling a man who was raised by a single mother on food stamps an Elitist. Sure, Obama attended Harvard, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't grandfathered in. So how is the old white man who was raised in privilege calling a man who took it upon himself to rise to the top an elitist?
This is what baffles me: Republicans calling Democrats elitists. Democrats, the party of the historic underdogs - black, jewish, gay, female - and we're the elite ones? Is it because we don't conform to societal norms that we are elite? Is it because we don't feel the need to marry young and pop out little ones shortly thereafter? It's often Republicans who sit with their families in church and make judgement on the souls of those who aren't like them - black, jewish, gay, females unwed and without child - and yet we are the ones who are considered holier-than-thou? I think it's hardly elite to be a member of a party that is open to change and adversity. Often it's the members of the Democratic party who had to overcome the most adversity, so how dare anyone call that person an elitist, as if being elite is such a bad thing?
It reminds me of the episode of the Cosby Show when Vanessa was embarrassed that her family was wealthy. Claire refused to apologize for being a lawyer, or for Cliff being a doctor. They both worked hard to create a comfortable life for their children that they themselves most likely did not have. I believe the same is true for Senator Obama and his wife. Maybe they are the modern day, non-fictional Cliff and Claire Huxtable, and if so, they definitely should not have to apologize for how far they have come and for what they are trying to provide for their daughters and for the entire country. We should be so lucky to have an elitist as our President. It definitely beats the Missing Link who currently holds that office.
